About our Timber
At The Wood Project, we approach every Dining Table as a chance to give our beautiful timber a second life.
Salvaged, milled, kiln dried and custom built right here on the Mornington Peninsula. We know the origin of each and every slab we work with. Some of the trees we’ve salvaged are over 180 years old which makes the timber we provide extremely rare and full of character. Ask us about the history of the tree that your slab table was created from.
Designing your Slab Dining Table
The process starts by selecting your timber top from our wide range of kiln dried timber slabs.
Depending on your measurements we can provide tables made from a single slab or joined slabs with live or straight edges.
With over 50 species of timber on hand, we’ll help you select the perfect shade of timber from our blonde, brown, and red choices.
To finish your table, we will design steel powder-coated.
Choosing between a natural or straight-edged table
It’s the million dollar question!
We might be (definitely are) biased, but we love working with clients who choose to celebrate the natural shape and grain of our timber slabs.
By working with the timber slabs original form, you’re preserving the organic shape of the tree, and best of all ensuring that you end up with a finished table that’s truly one of a kind.
All of this being said, we understand that straight edged tables have their place and provide a practical, modern feel that adds symmetry to your space - this is why we offer both.

We locally outsource the manufacturing of the steel dining table legs. We design every set of legs for their unique slab top. This enables us to seamlessly fabricate the legs to showcase the beautiful timber top and ensures that legs will be hidden when there are large resin voids etc in the timber.
-
The quality and beauty of your timber slab table top can be easily maintained. The patina of the timber will change over time adding to the beautiful character of your timber top.
We recommend using a damp soft cloth, usually warm soapy water is enough. We recommend you refrain from ever using any type of cleaning solution or solvent on our timbers. Never leave spills for long periods and always wipe dry.

after milling our logs they are then left to air dry in the yard for approximately 8-10 months after which they moisture content would have come down allowing them to be put into the kiln where they are then kiln dried for approx 4 weeks. After frequent testing we take them out at the optimal moisture content of 11-12%.
-
Our tables are built incredibly sturdy, our frames are completed with rails. When moving your table you should never drag the table it should always be lifted.
-
It's preferable to avoid placing your indoor table in sunlight or in the direct path of air conditioning systems. The timber will naturally expand and contract, but sunlight & great variations in temperature & humidity will exacerbate this movement. We take the utmost care in drying our timbers to ensure optimal moisture content and with larger slabs in most cases we relief cut the underside of the slab to allow for movement.
