Milled and Mortised Post and Rail Fencing

We salvage local Cypress Macrocarpa, a premium and durable softwood that has great resistance to insect and borer attacks. Our Cypress is rated class three inground, which means that a 50x50mm stake will last between 5 and 15 years. Because of this, we supply larger, durable posts that are at least 150x150mm in size.

As an alternative to Cypress, we also offer Ironbark hardwood. Ironbark is class one inground and can last for up to 40 years. This durable timer can stand the test of time and is competitively priced.

Your property will stand out from the crowd with our post and rail fencing in NSW or anywhere in Australia, with our sustainable and customisable fencing kits.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • We source Cypress Macrocarpa, a premium, durable softwood with great resistant to insect and borer attack. This Cypress is rated a class-three in ground, meaning that a 50x50 post will last at least 5-10 years. Because of this, we supply larger, more durable posts that are at least 150x150mm in size.

We also have a hardwood option - ironbark, this is class one in ground meaning it will last 40 + years in ground - this option comes in at a cost approx. 35% more than the cypress macrocarpa.

Both options look fantastic, it’s simply a matter of personal preference.

  • Current processing time is 6-8 weeks from date of deposit, all milled to order and ready to be picked up or delivered Australia wide.

Local crane truck delivery starts at $200, with deliveries further afield quoted according to postcode.

  • Yes, whether you need to go further into the ground or a higher fence with custom mortise spacing – can be done.

  • Rail lengths can be whatever you need to suit your requirements, however, we prefer to supply 2.4m (or shorter) as longer rails are more susceptible to sagging. You may have only 1 rail in 20 that sags, this will ruin the look of your whole fence!

  • Ordering a two, three or four -rail Post and Rail kit from The Wood Project means that your new fence will arrive milled, mortised and ready to prepare for installation.

The Wood Project can recommend an experienced installer should you require installation of your post and rail kit.

Before you start installing your fence, be sure to check out our Post and Rail Preparation Guide to maintain the longevity of your fence once it’s in-ground. View our guide here.

  • Yes. We certainly can offer angle mortise. Please

  • Yes it can, rails are usually notched on top and bottom corners where necessary to slot into posts.

  • Yes, you will need to supply a drawing of what you need with your enquiry.

  • Yes, all fencing options are available in either 200x50 or 150x50mm.

  • Please be aware that we mill locally salvaged cypress, our posts and rails are milled from trees not marble! What happens in the milling process is that obviously it’s a round log that gets milled into something with square edges but the log may have inconsistencies or bark inclusions that run deep into the log so the square post will have this included in the finished product, from time to time one or more of your posts in your order may include less than perfect edges, these are called ‘bark inclusions’ and or ‘natural wane’.

Understanding Natural Wane with Cypress Post & Rail

Cypress Post & Rail

Rare Natural Wane on a Cypress Post

We locally mill cypress from salvaged trees, creating square-edged posts and rails. Sometimes, the presence of bark or inconsistencies may result in imperfect edges called "bark inclusions" or "natural wane." These do not affect the fence's durability or the wood's integrity. Our Wood-Mizer mill leaves the timber in excellent condition without unsightly saw marks found in other mills.

Given it’s a natural product, some posts may have imperfect edges. This doesn’t affect the structural performance of the timber and once installed will be difficult to detect.
